Jeremy has over a decade of teaching experience and is passionate about helping students achieve their goals. His students have received honors (from Seattle Young Artists Music Festival, ABRSM, etc.) and invitations to prestigious programs. Lessons are centered on classical repertoire and are supplemented with scales, sight-reading, fingering technique, and theory studies. You are welcome to submit a form requesting a complimentary trial lesson. If a lesson time that works for your schedule is unavailable you are welcome to join the waiting list. You will be notified when a new time becomes available.
Areas taught: composition and piano
Currently offering virtual and in-person lessons. Virtual lessons work well for experienced piano students/composition study. In-person lessons take place in your home and are available in Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, Bothell, and Lynnwood.
Please...
- Prepare and be ready to focus during lessons. Maturity matters. Lessons can be fun but students must be able to focus on the music and listen to their instructor. Preparation is essential. Practicing can be a challenge but it is worth it! It is all about making things easier in the long run. Negligent preparation will compromise your eligibility for future lessons.
- Play a good piano. The space in your home used for lessons and practicing should have an acoustic piano if possible and be distraction-free. Contact the Steinway Piano Gallery in downtown Seattle, Classic Pianos, Northwest Pianos, or Stage 7 Pianos if you are looking for an instrument. Be sure to tune your piano at least once every year.
- Anticipate playing in student recitals. This encouraged but not required.
- Own a metronome and have it available for use at lessons. Apps are too distracting—use a real metronome. The simpler the better. Be prepared to purchase sheet music.
- Remember you are responsible for the behavior of those in your home during lessons, including beloved pets. A reasonably clean space, appropriate hygiene and dress are appreciated.
- Request a virtual lesson if you are sick. Your teacher may refuse to continue an in-person lesson if you are sick and contagious. Masks may also be worn.
- If you are having an online lesson, use a laptop with a good external microphone. Jeremy can hear what pitches you are playing without seeing your hands but try to set up your camera so that it shows you and your keyboard. Please, no recording of virtual or in-person lessons without the teacher's consent.
- Take into consideration that online piano lessons are a wonderful fit for some but not all. If possible, younger beginning students (and many beginning students in general) should have in-person lessons to develop good technical habits before trying online lessons for an extended period of time.
Scheduling
It is to be expected that some lessons will need to be rescheduled due to student or teacher obligations (see below), but in general anticipate taking weekly lessons with the exception of some common breaks throughout the year. Fall session begins the first week of September and ends after the second full week of December. Winter-spring session begins the first week of January and ends after the third full week of June. Spring break takes place usually around the second week of April. Summer session is optional but recommended and lasts from late June through the end of August. Summer session scheduling is more flexible (you don’t need to have the same lesson time or have lessons every week) but in order to keep your regular lesson slot for fall session you need to take at least 3 hours of lessons during the summer.
Please give adequate notice if you wish to discontinue your lessons or need to reschedule. Requests to discontinue lessons apply 4 weeks from the date of your cancellation request. Lessons occurring before then will not be refunded. While a new time cannot be guaranteed, you may reschedule up to 2 lessons each calendar year with at least 2 weeks’ notice. You will need to continue paying your monthly tuition if you wish to keep your spot during long absences for vacations, international trips, etc. There are no refunds for missed lessons. If you miss a lesson due to your/your teacher's unforeseen circumstances (sickness etc.) then a virtual make-up lesson may be offered but is not guaranteed. If you are unable to participate at the offered make-up lesson time your teacher is not obligated to refund you or offer another make-up lesson. Your lesson starts promptly when scheduled so please be on time! If your teacher is more than 15 minutes late you will be refunded for that lesson; if you are more than 15 fifteen minutes late your teacher will cancel the lesson and you will not be refunded. With adequate planning this should rarely (if ever) be an issue. Ultimately your teacher wants you to get the most from your lessons!
Congratulations on your choice to pursue music lessons! As Sergei Rachmaninoff said, “Music is enough for a lifetime but a lifetime is not enough for music.” You will be amazed by what you can accomplish while taking lessons and practicing with dedication and a love for music. Even if you do not want to perform or have a career in music, playing and studying music has proven neurological benefits and can enhance your ability to communicate and understand abstract concepts. The creative and expressive pathways music opens between us are one of the greatest joys of the art form.
